The BGC Ottawa (BGCO), formerly Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa, has served the Ottawa community since 1923, reaching out to 4,500 children and youth each year through after-school, weekend and summer programs that build self-esteem and help to develop stronger social skills.
Kitchens at BGCO Clubhouses play a huge role in effectively promoting healthy eating habits as part of the Physical Activity and Healthy Lifestyles program pillar. BGCO staff and volunteers normally utilize this kitchen on a daily basis to run the “Healthy Snacks Program,” a key component of the Homework Club. With a properly outfitted kitchen, preparing the healthy snacks can be done much more efficiently. It’s difficult to concentrate in school when you’re hungry, the Healthy Snacks program ensures Members have the fuel they need to succeed.
BGCO’s new virtual program “Kid Food Nation” provides an opportunity for children and youth to learn about healthy eating while creating fun and delicious snacks and meals at home.
Funds raised through ODBF will help support BGCO’s virtual programming and the purchase of smaller appliances, pots and pans, dishes, etc. that are necessary for the preparation of healthy snacks for our Members when they return to the Clubhouse again.
