Boys & Girls Club of Ottawa

The Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa (BGCO) has served the Ottawa community since 1923, reaching out to 4,500 children and youth each year through after-school, weekend and summer programs that build self-esteem and help to develop stronger social skills.
Kitchens at BGCO Clubhouses play a huge role in effectively promoting healthy eating habits as part of the Physical Activity and Healthy Lifestyles program pillar. BGCO staff and volunteers utilize this kitchen on a daily basis to run the “Healthy Snacks Program,” a key component of the Homework Club. With a properly outfitted kitchen, preparing the healthy snacks can be done much more efficiently. It’s difficult to concentrate in school when you’re hungry, the Healthy Snacks program ensures Members have the fuel they need to succeed.
Funds raised through our Capital Campaign to renovate the Tomlinson Family Foundation Clubhouse only allowed for construction of the new kitchen, plus the purchase of industrial kitchen appliances such as stoves, refrigerators, freezers and dishwashers. The grant we are requesting from the ODBF will serve to purchase smaller appliances, pots and pans, dishes, etc. that are necessary for the preparation of healthy snacks for our Members on a daily basis, in addition to the preparation of meals for large groups such Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival Volunteers.
